Dear Sylvia
Lake Property Owners,
All of us agree that Sylvia Lake is a very special
place, with generations of families and many wonderful memories.
Unfortunately, our beautiful little lake needs your help. As most
of you are aware, the forests and trees surrounding Sylvia Lake have
experienced a series of devastating events that threaten their very
survival—the microburst,
ice storm, droughts, and most recently, the devastating Forest
and Eastern Tent Caterpillar infestation.
This infestation caused terrible stress to our trees
and along with previous events, could permanently alter the natural
beauty of the area. The health of our lake water is directly tied
to the health of the forest and watershed. Without intervention,
last Spring’s defoliation,
caused by the caterpillars, may be repeated this year and we could lose
a substantial percentage of the hardwood trees around the lake. In collaboration
with the Town of Fowler, the Sylvia Lake Association has been actively
pursuing remedies to prevent a repeat of last year’s
devastation.
Members of a Task Force which includes representatives
from the Town of Fowler and a number of Sylvia Lake residents,
have met with forest biologists and other specialists from the area
and have determined that an aerial spraying is a necessary course
of action to save our trees. Any property owner who cares about the
value of their investment, will view this as a must-do project. The Duflo
Aerial Spray Company of New Bremen has been contracted to spray
the trees during the critical stage of caterpillar development. This
most likely will take place in early May. A fact sheet is enclosed
for your reference. If
you have further questions, there will be an important workshop on Saturday,
April 3, 9:30-3:00, at the Elks Club, Gouverneur, NY. Speakers from the
Northeast will address the current situation, impact, and remedies.
Your financial support for this project is essential.
The cost for spraying our properties from the shoreline to 600 feet
interior is $5000. The Task Force is hopeful that each property owner
can contribute $50.00 (more would be fantastic) Any remaining funds
will be set aside for future pest elimination. Those property owners
who contribute $50.00 or more by April 28, will be entered into a
drawing for a very special handmade Sylvia Lake quilt, created by
Sylvia Lake quilt crafters. Watch for updates and information on
the Sylvia Lake website: www.sylvialake.org.
